This is my first book, The Man For Maggie. It
won the Clendon Award in 1999 and luckily for me it caught the attention of editor Leslie
Wainger. Detective Sergeant Max Strachan is pulled
in two directions, when the woman he falls for knows more about murder than any innocent
woman should. As for Maggie Kovacs, cops are way down on her wanna-know list, having given
her nothing but grief. Yet, she makes an exception in Max's case, not because he can make
her dreams come true, because he can make them go away.
The action in this book takes place in New Zealand
vineyard, because that's where I live, though I got there by way of Scotland where I was
born. When I was eighteen I met the love of my life who was in the New Zealand navy . More
than thirty years on we're still together and have two sons, two little grandsons and a
wheaten terrier that thinks she runs the house.
I've always been a voracious reader, and romances are
pretty good reading in the middle of the night when your husband is thousands of miles
away. But I never considered writing one myself, until a continuing education teacher
asked why I wasn't in a creative writing course instead.
For the past ten years we've lived out in the country in
Auckland's wine district. Living surrounded by wineries, something had to rub off and the
setting makes a good background for some very suspenseful moments. Now, as I write, I can
watch the native birds flit among the trees from my study window, while I conjure up
heroes a woman would travel to the ends of the earth for. The way I did. |
